Comienzos: An Unfolding Path
On September 14, 2009, 4 other facilitators and I launched a 6-week pilot program at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). Though our organization, Comienzos, has built a reputation at MDC over the last 25 years, this marks the beginnings of a new direction. Beyond individual classes, we've begun to move toward saturating an entire pod of 90 inmates with practices, classes, and other ongoing opportunities for learning and deepening the skills and awareness to live more free, interdependent, and peaceful lives....
In the coming weeks, I will be updating news and stories about the unfolding of this new program, which is based on restorative justice philosophy and restorative values. We seek to contribute to creating a restorative space, in which inmates can heal the traumas that have affected not only their own lives, but the lives of their families, friends, and other community members. Through this program we aim to support these men not only to take full responsibility for their actions, and to transform their own lives, but also for them to take a leading role in creating the social change necessary to build a safer world.
